2/23 NFL Combine Saturday Wrap-up: Weigh-ins, Measurements for DLs, LBs; Bench Press for RBs; Field Drills and Running for OLs and TEs.

Key Notes:

-A pair of outside linebackers answered any doubts about size by weighing in at 241 pounds.  Khaseem Greene of Rutgers and Arthur Brown of Kansas St. were looked at as safety/linebacker "tweeners" but both have the size to stay at linebacker, a plus for both prospects.

- Tyler Eifert seems to be establishing himself as the clear-cut top tight end in the draft.  Eifert ran a 4.6 40 and excelled in the field drills, showcasing himself as a complete tight end and a dynamic receiver.

-Two more unheralded tight ends who had great days were Vance McDonald and Chris Gragg.  McDonald had his second great day in a row by running a 4.69 40 despite weighing 267lbs.  Coupled with his 31 bench press reps from yesterday, McDonald is the most physically impressive tight end in this draft.  Gragg, an injury-prone prospect from Arkansas, was times running his 40 in 4.44 seconds, making him the fastest tight end in the draft.  Gragg is a bit smaller than most tight ends but he clearly has upside as a receiver and should be a mid-round pick.

-Jonathan Cooper was considered a first round lock before the combine, so it's hard to imagine he really improved his stock.  But Cooper added weight this offseason and then had 35 reps of 225 in the bench press, followed by running a solid 5.13 40 with a 1.73 10 yard split (a better indicator of a lineman's "burst") to show that he hadn't lost his patented speed.  Chance Warmack looked great in the drills but it's Cooper who stole the show in the athletic events, which I suspect will lead to some teams valuing him more than Warmack (but not me).

-Travis Frederick was a candidate to be the first center off the board, but he really disappointed at the combine.  First he lost a lot of strength with the weight he needed to drop, and then he ran a 5.50 40 with a 1.85 split.  Frederick will have a lot of ground to make up if he still wants to go in the second round.

-Eric Fisher and Luke Joeckel both did well in the field work, and Fisher was a little quicker in the running drills.  Neither tackle did anything to hurt their stock, but the gap between Joeckel and Fisher as the top tackles appears to be shrinking.

- Lane Johnson ranks behind Joeckel and Fisher but he has been the story of the combine thus far.  Johnson ran a 4.75 40 with a split of 1.61, best of the O-lineman.  Johnson looks like a Top 11 pick. 

-Arkansas Pine-Bluff's Terron Armstead is a sleeper to rise up draft boards.  Armstead's height, weight, and arms are all lined up with Joeckel's, and he had 31 bench press reps and ran a OL-best 4.65 with a 1.64 split.  Armstead flashed all the raw tools to play the left tackle spot, so it'll be interesting to see if the FCS product can make a run at going in the first couple of rounds.

2/22 NFL Combine Friday Wrap-up: Weigh-ins, Measurements for QBs, RBs, and WRs; Bench Press for OLs and TEs

Key Notes:

- Mike Glennon measured in at 6'7" making him the tallest QB in the draft.  Geno Smith was a little shorter than expected at 6'2" but that isn't expected to impact his draft stock.  6'2" isn't ideal height but it's tall enough for a QB.

-Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson is the only QB with hands smaller than 9" in diameter.  Wilson has had some ball security issues in college and his small hands make it harder for him to hold the football as tight as someone with larger hands.

- Clemson receiver DeAndre Hopkins had the best day on the measurement board.  Hopkins is 6'1", 214lbs, with large hands (more than 10") and long arms (more than 33").  If Hopkins runs well he's undoubtedly a first round pick.

- Baylor's Terrance Williams measured in at 6'2", but his hands are only 8.7" in diameter, which some scouts worry will lead to more dropped passes at the next level.  Williams was sure-handed at Baylor, so the hands drills will be critical in his evaluation.

-While top guard prospect Chance Warmack didn't participate in the bench (he will at his pro day), the consensus second guard prospect, Jonathan Cooper, had 35 reps of 225lbs and shold see a rise in his stock.  Cooper was known as a speedy, finesse lineman in college but has bulked up and gotten stronger for the NFL.

-Wisconsin center Travis Frederick had scouts buzzing yesterday after weighing in at 312 pounds (down 28 from his listed weight), but after the short armed Badger only had 21 reps of 225lbs, you start to wonder if he lost a lot of his strength with that weight.  Frederick is in a pickle because it's hard to play center at 340lbs but his bread and butter is man on man run blocking.

-The top tackles held thier own on the bench as Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher each had 27 reps, but Lane Johnson of Oklahoma continued his terrific combine with 28 reps despite having arms that are almost an inch longer than Joeckel's and Fisher's.  Long arms make each rep require the player to move the weight that much farther up (explaining D.J. Fluker, one of the strongest blockers in the draft, getting only 21 because of his freakish arms).  Johnson is probably having the best combine so far of any player to start his workouts.

- Rice tight end Vance McDonald has the second longest arms of any tight end in the draft, but he still put up 31 reps of 225, easily the most at the position.  McDonald is a workout warrior and might wind up being the strongest guy in the draft pound for pound.

-Rutgers tight end D.C. Jefferson only had 3 reps of 225.  That's not a misprint.  Once you stop giggling, consider Jefferson may or may not have torn his pectoral muscle on his second rep.  That's still a bad sign though.

2/21 NFL Combine Thursday Wrap-up: Weigh-ins, Measurements for OLs and TEs

Key Notes:

-It was a rough day for the top tier tight ends in this class.  Stanford's Zach Ertz measured in with 31.75" arms, tied for the shortest among all the tight ends.  If football is a game of inches, those precious inches Ertz is giving up as a target for a QB could mean some teams will devalue him.  Another tight end who didn't impress was Jordan Reed of Florida.  Reed is only 6'2.5" tall and 236lbs, making him the shortest and the second-lightest tight end in the draft.  At this point Reed is probably not even a tight end on some boards, and some teams will view him as a receiver or a hybrid in the Dallas Clarke mold, but certainly not an all-around tight end by any means.

-Tyler Eifert measured in great across the board and appears to have clearly edged Ertz as the top tight end in the draft.  But three tight ends outside of my top 5 at the position did well today too.  Ertz's teammate Levine Toilolo is 6'8'' and 260 pounds, and UCLA tight end Joseph Fauria had the biggest hands of any tight end and measured 6'7" and 259lbs.  Both of those players should rise and appear to be dynamic redzone threats based off their bodies alone.  Dion Sims of Michigan St. also did well, as the blocking specialist was lighter than expected at 262 pounds and could be seen as more of a complete tight end if he runs well.

-Alabama's D.J. Fluker drew raves for dropping 16 pounds after the Senior Bowl, and measured in with 36.75" arms, the longest of any tackle in the draft.  Fluker is considered purely a right tackle but if he runs well with those arms he will skyrocket up boards because he will be considered capable of playing left tackle.  With a good workout I could see Fluker going as high as 5th to Detroit or 7th to Arizona.

-The top offensive linemen all had the weigh-ins and measureables to back up their draft stock.  Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher both have the height, frame, and arms to be franchise left tackles, and Lane Johnson continues to look more and more like a Top 16 pick after weighing in the same ballpark as the top guys, and having the longest arms of the three.  For guards, Chance Warmack has a really good reach with his tackle-like arms, and Jonathan cooper added about 16 pounds in preparation for the combine.

Breaking Down Pre-Combine Positional Rankings

The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine is just a day away, as the festivities begin on Wednesday and will really pick up over the weekend.  Year in and year out the combine is a huge factor in determining a prospect’s stock, and this year there are tons of players to keep an eye on.  With that in mind, let’s take a look at my top 5 players at each position before the combine.

I’m sure plenty of names caught your eye or surprised you.  Without going too deep into my ratings process, here’s some explanations of key decisions/surprises.

First, let’s talk about the linebackers in this year’s class.  Alec Ogletree of Georgia is the consensus top guy, but his recent DUI arrest is just the latest in a long list of red flags.  Due to some bad intangibles, a lack of coverage skills, and his smaller-than-ideal stature, I’ve got Ogletree ranked fourth among linebackers, and he doesn’t have a first round grade.  Neither does Manti Te’o, who I have ranked tied for second.  It remains to be seen how NFL teams view Te’o after the hoax girlfriend, but that aside Te’o isn’t a tackling machine or a guy that is going to blow up a lot of ball carriers in the backfield.  I think his lack of top speed (let’s see his 40 time) means he’s best suited as a 3-4 inside linebacker.

Khaseem Greene is tied with Te’o and is the top 4-3 outside linebacker prospect in this class.  Greene is a former safety who tackles and covers very well, but is undersized.  If he shows good strength and tests well in Indy, he could be a first round pick despite 4-3 OLBs having low positional value. 

Lastly, the top linebacker on my board right now is Kevin Minter from LSU.  He doesn’t get the attention of Te’o or Ogletree but Minter had more tackles than either of them last season.  He played the Mike on LSU’s vaunted defense and called the plays with a slew of other NFL caliber talents around him.  Minter doesn’t have any measurables that jump out at you but he’s a really solid middle linebacker in a 4-3 and I have him graded as a mid to late first rounder.

My pass rushers board is also a bit different that most analysts but I feel confident in how it is stacked.  Ezekiel Ansah from BYU is the fifth ranked edge rusher and has freakish upside.  He ranks higher than lauded rushers Dion Jordan (Oregon) and Barkevious Mingo (LSU) because he is the biggest and probably the strongest of the three.  All three don’t have the stats to back up their talent, but Ansah scored higher and is a mid to late first rounder. 

Alex Okafor is probably a surprise ahead of those guys but the senior from Texas is the real deal.  He racked up 12.5 sacks last year and was dominant in his bowl game.  He also is one of the few pass rushers in this class that can play end in a 4-3 without having to add weight and slow his speed.  With a good combine I expect other analysts will realize he’s likely going to go in the 15-25 range.

Jarvis Jones of Georgia is the toughest player in this draft to guage, because he’s one of the most electric prospects in the draft but has a couple of red flags.  First, he has a spinal disorder that caused USC’s doctors to rule him unable to play, leading to his transfer to Georgia after his freshman year.  I’m not sure how NFL teams will assess that, but I can’t help but be reminded that Da’Quan Bowers was a consensus Top 5 pick who fell to the 50^th selection two years ago because of a knee issue that flared up before the draft.  The other red flag against Jones is that there are rumblings that he isn’t a workout warrior and likely will struggle at the combine.  So there is clearly a lot of risk involved with Jones, but I have him firmly in the first round.  He’s too good of a football player to fall far.

Second among pass rushers is Damontre Moore of Texas A&M, a likely Top 5 pick.  I think Moore is a tad overrated at the moment but a great combine could help persuade me that he’s worth a Top 5 pick.  I’ve got him valued right around the 8-12 range. 

The top guy as far as pass rushers right now is Bjoern Werner of Florida St.  Werner is German-born and hasn’t been playing football for that long, but he’s a natural.  He’s one of the rare pass rushers in this class that’s ready to play 43 end and his 13.5 sacks last year are evidence that he can get after the QB at will.  Werner is also a proficient run stopper and should be a Top 10 pick barring some real missteps in the pre-draft process.

Alas, the most important (and difficult) position to evaluate is the Quarterback position.  Tyler Wilson is a name that keeps popping up as a potential number 2 QB behind Geno Smith but I’m not seeing it from Wilson.  He has a below average arm and isn’t particularly great at anything, although he has shown plenty of toughness playing behind a bad line in college.  I have him ranked sixth among QBs, with a third round grade.

Coming in at number 5 is Ryan Nassib, the Syracuse signal caller who is drawing Andy Dalton comparisons.  Nassib (left) doesn’t have a great arm or anything special physically, but he’s a smart player who has a lot of experience as a fifth year senior.  I’m curious to see how his interviews at the combine go, because that was a major stock booster for Dalton two years ago.  Righ now I’ve got Nassib slotted with a low second/high third round grade.

Matt Barkley and Mike Glennon are tied for third among QBs on my board, with mid to low second round grades.  These two are the bottom rung as far as QBs I can see being starters in the league (making 4 in this class).  Barkley stayed at USC for his senior year even though he could have gone as high as 4^th to Cleveland last year (and as low as 22^nd, again to Cleveland).  His stock dropped as he made some awful decisions and seemed to regress as far as his accuracy goes.  He isn’t going to throw at the combine so his stock should remain stagnant.  Barkley reminds me of Jimmy Clausen, but I think he will entice someone into picking him higher than he deserves based off his stock from a year ago (a la Jake Locker two years ago.)

Mike Glennon (right) is a big, strong armed QB who has yet to harness his physical gifts.  He is a turnover machine and makes bad reads when he has too much time to think.  The result is a guy someone might draft to be Joe Flacco, and he might also turn out to be just a stiff, immobile QB who has a cannon arm but can’t make the right reads.  He is definitely a boom or bust prospect.

My second ranked QB is E.J. Manuel, and I’m sure I’m in the minority in having Manuel ranked so high (I’ve got him ranked as a low first/high second round prospect right now).  Manuel’s critics will point to his decision making, his inability to dominate at Florida St., and his meltdown against Florida this season on national TV.  However, I believe it now and I expect the combine to confirm that Manuel is easily the most naturally gifted of the top level QBs.  He has ideal size (around 6’5’’, 240) and will run a solid 40 time as well.  He also has the second strongest arm in the draft behind Glennon.  I’m a believer that there are certain advantages to having skills that can’t be taught and Manuel has a bevy of them.  I think he could definitely run the spread-read-option gimmick that the NFL is gaga over, but he also has 4 years of experience in a west coast offense under Jimbo Fisher.  At some point or another, I have to believe Manuel will get a good chance to be a starting QB in the NFL, and with some coaching and improvement, he can be a franchise quarterback.

Geno Smith is my top QB prospect, ranking somewhere around the low teens on my overall board.  Smith needs to learn to read defenses better after playing in a gimmicky spread college attack, but I think he should transition well because he protects the ball and generally is a pretty accurate passer.  He’s not Andrew Luck or RG3 but I think Geno Smith will turn into a starter in the league and he can be great if put in a position to succeed.  I think Mike Mayock said it best when he said Smith is a guy you like and would like to have, but nobody is banging the table in the draft room to demand that he be the guy their team selects.
