Geno Smith to Jets as DBs Dominate Day 2 of Draft

18 defensive backs were picked on Day 2 of the 2013 NFL Draft Friday night, establishing the deepest group in the draft while also showing the results of the pass-heavy trend in the modern NFL Game.

The highlight of the night appeared to be the back-to-back selections of controversial prospects Manti Te'o and Geno Smith at 38 and 39 respectively.  The San Diego Chargers moved up to draft Te'o, and the New York Jets followed it up by selecting the Quarterback who many experts feel will unseat the embattled Mark Sanchez in The Big Apple.

The selection of Smith was met with a loud chorus of boos from the large Jets contingent in the audience, but Smith kept his composure and made it clear he was excited about the opportunity to play in New York.

The defensive backs took over the draft from there, as players at other positions slipped in favor of the Cornerbacks and Safeties.

Tyrann Matthieu, formerly of LSU, was the ninth DB selected Friday, going to the Arizona Cardinals with the 69th overall pick.  Matthieu was dismissed from LSU's team for multiple failed drug tests but has said he will have clauses in his contract calling for random drug tests.

After Smith, the only other QB selected Friday was North Carolina State's Mike Glennon, drafted 73rd overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Much-hyped QBs Matt Barkley of USC and Ryan Nassib of Syracuse were surprisingly not selected  with many QB-needy teams opting to fill other needs, notably in the secondary.

After the 2013 Running Back class became the first in half a century to go completely untouched in the first round, 6 Running Backs were drafted and 1 was traded Friday.  Saints Running Back Chris Ivory was dealt to the Jets for a 4th round pick, which the Saints used to move up into the third round and pick Georgia Nose Tackle John Jenkins.

The draft resumes with the final 4 rounds Saturday afternoon.  Coverage begins at noon Eastern Time.
