Previewing Day 2 of The NFL Draft

The first night of the NFL Draft is in the books, and Patriots fans and football fans in general certainly got an entertaining kickoff to the draft.  Tonight, Day 2 of the draft takes place as rounds 2 and 3 will be completed.  Here's a guide to Friday Night.

1. Quarterbacks will go

Yes, only one QB was selceted in the first round Thursday night, but on Day 2 I'm expecting 5 or 6 to come off the board.  West Virginia's Geno Smith, Syracuse's Ryan Nassib (right), and USC's Matt Barkley are almost assured of going on Friday, and North Carolina State's Mike Glennon and Tennessee's Tyler Bray have impressed enough teams that I think they'll be drafted too.  The sleeper pick is Tyler Wilson of Arkansas, or perhaps even Landry Jones of Oklahoma.  Teams looking to draft a QB include but are not limited to:

- The Jacksonville Jaguars (picks 33 and 64)
- The Philadelphia Eagles (picks 35 and 67)
- The Arizona Cardinals (picks 38 and 69)
- The New York Jets (picks 39 and 72
- The Oakland Raiders (picks 42 and 66)
-The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Picks 43 and 73)
- The Pittsburgh Steelers (picks 48 and 79)
- The Chicago Bears (pick 50)
- The Cleveland Browns (pick 68)

Some teams have already inquired about trading up into the early second round for a QB, so expect lots of activity on the QB market.

2. Does anyone want Manti Te'o?

Te'o was rumored to be coveted by the Bears and Vikings, among other teams, yet the Notre Dame star (below) went all Thursday without being selected.  I expect Te'o to come off the board somewhere in the second round, however, as well as fellow Linebackers Arthur Brown (Kansas St.) and Kevin Minter (LSU).

3. Jack's Best Players Available

QB Geno Smith of West Virginia, CB Darius Slay of Mississippi St., DE Margus Hunt of SMU, OG Larry Warford of Kentucky, CB Jamar Taylor of Boise St., DT Bennie Logan of LSU, WR Terrance Williams of Baylor, OT Menelik Watson of Florida St., OLB Khaseem Greene of Rutgers, DT John Jenkins of Georgia, CB Johnthan Banks of Mississippi St., RB Johnathan Franklin of UCLA, DE/OLB Damontre Moore of Texas A&M, WR Justin Hunter of Tennessee, RB Giovani Bernard of North Carolina, C Barrett Jones of Alabama, MLB Kevin Minter of LSU, WR Ryan Swope of Texas A&M, TE Zach Ertz of Stanford, and DE/OLB Alex Okafor of Texas are just 20 of the players I expect to be drafted Friday night.

4. What will the Patriots Do?

I think they'll look to draft some combination of  a Wide Receiver, offensive lineman, pass rusher, and/or defensive back with their 4 picks Friday.  I don't expect them to trade up but I also don't think they'll draft 4 players.  If I had to guess I'd say the Patriots draft 3 players and trade one of the picks for a selection in the 2014 draft.

-Barrett Jones (The Alabama Center) was a name I heard around Gillette Stadium last night.  I don't know if he'll be on the board at 52 but he makes a lot of sense.  Other interior linemen who could be in play include Larry Warford of Kentucky, David Quessenberry (below) of San Jose St., and Brian Schwenke of Cal.

-Jamar Taylor, CB from Boise St. is a player the Patriots have been linked to, but he's probably going to be off the board.  Other corners who could be there are Johnthan Banks, Mississippi St, Logan Ryan of Rutgers, David Amerson of North Carolina St., Blidi Wreh-Wilson of UConn, or Jordan Poyer of Oregon St.

-For pass rushers, Johnathan Hankins from Ohio ST. and Bennie Logan from LSU make sense as Defensive Tackles in a 4-3 defense.  For ends, Damontre Moore of Texas A&M, Alex Okafor of Texas,  Corey Lemonier of Auburn, and Sam Montgomery of LSU are all possibilities.

- Wide Receiver is the position garnering the most discussion amongst the Patriots media.  Justin Hunter of Tennessee is a deep threat the Patriots could use, but he won't be there at 52.  Keenan Allen of Cal is also expected to be off the board by the time the Patriots pick.  Quinton Patton of Louisiana Tech is a polished receiver with good size, and he could be in play for a number of teams.  Ryan Swope of Texas A&M has deceptive speed but is an injury risk due to his concussion history.  Robert Woods of USC has some health concerns, and is expected to go early in round 2.  That leaves Terrance Williams as a possibility   Williams is a 6'2" receiver with decent speed and sure hands.  Stedman Bailey could get some looks on Friday night and the Patriots might want to pounce on him.  He isn't a big receiver, but he had 25 TD receptions last year at West Virginia (not a misprint), which more than doubled the total of teammate Tavon Austin, the 8th pick in the draft to St. Louis.  Lastly, the name Patriots fans should be mindful of is Da'Rick Rogers of Tennessee Tech.  Rogers was a starter at Tennessee (over Cordarrelle Patterson, the player the Vikings traded up with the Pats to get) before being kicked off the team after his sophomore year for failing 3 drug tests.  Despite his baggage, Rogers has undeniable talent: At 6'3" tall and 217 pounds, he runs a 4.5 40-yard-dash and has a 39.5" vertical leap.  If the Pats want a deep threat without having to move up for Hunter, they may want to take a chance on Rogers.

I'll be covering Day 2 of the 2013 NFL Draft LIVE from Gillette Stadium Friday.  Be sure to stay tuned to the blog and follow me on Twitter for live tweets and rumors.  I'll do my best to keep everyone in the loop.
