Linemen, Defensive Players Dominate First Round as Smith, Te'o Fall

The first round of the NFL Draft was dominated by offensive linemen and defensive players Thursday night in what was a historically unpredictable first round.

Of the 32 players selected in the first round, only 5 were offensive skill players.  Quarterback Geno Smith (right) was considered a possible Top 6 pick but went through the first night undrafted.  The 2013 first round also marked the first since 1963 in which no Running Backs were chosen.

As expected, the Chiefs and Jaguars picked Offensive Tackles Eric Fisher of Central Michigan and Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M respectively with the first two picks.  The Miami Dolphins traded up to the third spot and appeared inclined to select Offensive Tackle Lane Johnson of Oklahoma, but opted instead for pass rusher Dion Jordan of Oregon.  The surprise pick set the tone for the rest of the night.

It was a rough night for Shariff Floyd, the Defensive Tackle from Florida who was expected to be a Top 5 pick by most analysts.  Floyd saw two defensive tackles go ahead of him as he dropped all the way to the Minnesota Vikings at 23.

It was a similarly difficult night for Smith, the West Virginia signal caller who saw his name go uncalled.  E.J. Manuel of Florida St. was the surprise first QB off the board to the Buffalo Bills at 16.  No other QBs were selected on Thursday.

Then there was the plight of Manti Te'o, the infamous Notre Dame Linebacker who saw his draft stock plummet out of the first round after a poor showing in the National Championship Game and subsequent "Catfishing" by a fake online girlfriend reported to have died last fall.  Te'o (below) was reported to be safely back in the first round but went through the night without his name being called.

There weren't as many trades as expected within the first round, but plenty of teams moved around the draft board nonetheless.  In addition to the Dolphins, the 49ers made a big move up the board from 31 to 18 to select Safety Eric Reid of LSU.  The Rams moved up 8 spots from 16 to 8 and then moved down 8 spots from 22 to 30.  Tavon Austin and Alec Ogletree wound up in St. Louis.  Lastly, the Minnesota Vikings traded their second, third, fourth, and seventh round selections in order to move up to the 29th overall pick and select their third player of the first round, wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson of Tennessee.

The draft resumes Friday night at 6:30 P.M. Eastern Time and continues up through the end of Round 3.  The Jacksonville Jaguars have the first pick of the second round, and the New England Patriots have a league-high 4 Day 2 picks as a result of the Vikings trade.
