Trade, Andruzzi Speech Highlight Round 1 for Patriots

The scene was set for the most emotional first round draft choice in Patriots history.

A short video package played in Radio City Music Hall to honor the victims and first responders of the
Boston Marathon Massacre.      The chorus to "Sweet Caroline" played and New Yorkers and football fans of all teams sang along.  And in the middle of it all, former Patriots Guard and first responder Joe Andruzzi (right) gave a heart-warming speech that could only be described as "Boston Strong."

Then Andruzzi announced the anti-climatic news that television viewers were well aware of- The Patriots had traded out of the 29th slot in the draft and out of the first round altogether.

It was a fitting end to the night for the Patriots, a franchise that for years has been able to set personal items aside and do what's best for the team- whether that's benching star Quarterback Drew Bledsoe in 2001, trading defensive cornerstone Richard Seymour in 2009, or letting Wes Welker leave in free agency this past spring.

The Patriots traded the 29th pick to the Minnesota Vikings for picks in the second, third, fourth, and seventh rounds in the 2013 draft- numbers 52, 83, 102, and 229.  The Vikings used the 29th pick on Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (below).

According to the famous NFL Draft Pick Trade Value Chart, the Patriots acquired 647 points worth of picks, while the 29th pick is worth 640 points, making the trade extremely fair by the chart's standards.

The Patriots now hold 8 selections in the 2013 draft, including a league-high 4 on Friday night (the 52nd, 59th, 83rd, and 91st overall picks).

"In that second to third round we thought there was some degree of value in the draft, so we're in a situation where hopefully we can capitalize on that," said Nick Caserio, Patriots Director of Player Personnel.

The draft resumes Friday at 6:30 Eastern Time.  Be sure to stay tuned to Jack Andrade Sports for Patriots Analysis and Post-Draft Press Conferences for all 3 days of the draft.
